The Broke Medievalist.: What's the rush?

barreloforanges:

What is everyone so afraid of? Why the rush to cut a baby’s penis? If circumcision is so beneficial, why not trust our sons to make that decision for himself? Are we afraid that if we give our sons the option to reap all the glorious “medical benefits” of genital cutting,…

Life Intact: Truth Requires Context: Male Circumcision

philosophyoffat:

Recently, there have been a slew of posts from various blogs I follow regarding male circumcision. The general trend seems to be open demonizing of circumcisions as variously “unnecessary,” “mutilation,” “child abuse,” brutal,” or “barbaric.” The conversations are often…

Great points, all.

Despite what some activists claim, refusal to confront [male genital alteration] actually makes the task of eradicating [female genital alteration] more difficult. Supporters of FGA in cultures that still practice it are quick to identify the double standard in the attitude of Western agencies that seek to eradicate FGA while tolerating, or even promoting, MGA. They point out that “American parents circumcise their newborns so that the sons will look like the fathers … . What, they ask, gives Americans the right to apply a different standard to African women?”.

A little perspective.  Either Finnish men’s genitals are VASTLY different than ours, or we have a huge problem with OUR doctors.I’ve walked it down from all students to just male students (using a common rate on F/M ratio), and for the sake of argument have allowed that that ONE male who ‘needed’ to be circumcised would need it by a young age.  Technically it would be THE rarest body mod on campus, tied with any other singleton mods.  Here you’ll find an article on how problems such as tight foreskin are addressed in a nation such as France.  http://www.cirp.org/library/treatment/phimosis/beauge2/

Good stat to know. We don’t have faulty foreskins, just uninformed doctors who are themselves circumcised.

Good Parenting: Exhibit 1 (overheard at work today)

  • 6-year old: Mommy, why is that man dressed like a lady?
  • Mother: That is a lady. She was just born with the wrong body.
  • 6-year old: How did that happen?
  • Mother: Nobody really knows. But she's working to fix it, and that's what's important.
  • 6-year old: Okay! *runs up to obviously self-conscious woman*
  • 6-year old: Hey! Miss!
  • Lady: ...yes?
  • 6-year old: You look really pretty in your skirt!
  • Lady: Thank you!
  • *Kid skips back to her mom, and literally everyone in the vicinity smiles*
